Bina Daigeler's Reaping Day palette, read closely

Costuming on Sunrise on the Reaping passes from Trish Summerville — who shaped the look of Catching Fire and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes — to Bina Daigeler, the Oscar-nominated designer behind Mulan. It’s the first Hunger Games film in over a decade without Summerville’s hand on the District wardrobe, and the early stills suggest Daigeler knows exactly what she inherited.

The Reaping Day frames released so far sit deep in District 12’s register: dust, denim, washed cotton, clothes that have been mended more than once. It’s a generation before Katniss, and the poverty reads older — more Depression photography than the 2012 film’s muted grey.

And then there’s one colour that doesn’t belong: a saturated note in the crowd that reads almost Capitol. Costume departments don’t do that by accident. We’ll be watching for it in the next trailer.
